How to Let Go of Perfection and Embrace the Unexpected

When Plans Fall Apart: Finding Adventure in the Unexpected

Life, especially travel, rarely goes as planned—believe me, I’ve been there. Down below is a list of three strategies I use to embrace the unexpected, let go of perfection, and practical tips to make them work for you!

One memorable weekend, I had meticulously mapped out every detail, but I ended up stranded in the quiet town of Agordo, Italy because the bus didn’t run on Sundays. With no other options, I spent the day wandering the streets and ended up paying for a taxi to Venice. Just when I thought the chaos had ended, a train strike left me stranded overnight.

It sounds stressful—and at the time, it was. At first, it felt overwhelming, but once I embraced the situation, it turned into something entirely different. I found joy in rolling with the punches and discovered unexpected opportunities. What could have been a disaster turned into a new adventure.

This experience taught me an important lesson: perfection doesn’t exist, and sometimes the most rewarding moments come when you embrace the unexpected.

The Illusion of Perfection

Social media, including my own, often highlights only the best moments—the picture-perfect sunsets, the postcard-worthy landmarks, and the seemingly flawless experiences. But life, and especially travel, doesn’t work that way. Delays, bad weather, and unplanned detours are inevitable, no matter how carefully you plan.

Flaws make us human, differences make us unique, and plans rarely unfold perfectly. By letting go of the expectation and need for perfection, you open yourself to appreciating the beauty in imperfection and the adventure that comes with it.

The Magic of the Unexpected

Some of my favorite memories while traveling in Italy happened entirely by chance. I befriended a barista who introduced me to local hot springs—not once, but twice. I visited towns like Civitavecchia, Montefiascone, Porto Santo Stefano, and Bolsena Lake, creating unforgettable memories along the way.

Even that overnight delay in Venice turned into a gift: extra time to explore the canals and immerse myself in the breathtaking atmosphere of the city. And in a completely different moment, a random stranger in Chicago not only helped my sick friend but took us to climb a lighthouse, creating a scene straight out of a movie.

These moments—unplanned, imperfect, and unexpected—are the ones I’ll treasure forever.

Embracing the Journey

Here are three key ways to let go of perfection and embrace the unexpected:

  1. Be Invested in the Goal, Not Attached to the Outcome
    • Smart planning is essential, but unexpected twists add depth to your journey. You’ll either learn a lesson, make incredible memories, or find that your plan works out after all.
  2. Focus on the Present
    • Mindfulness and awareness help you enjoy where you are, even if it’s not where you planned to be. Stop and take in the sights, sounds, and experiences of the moment.
  3. Connect with People
    • Some of the most meaningful connections come from fellow travelers or locals. Whether it’s a random stranger helping in a pinch or a new friend showing you a hidden gem, these relationships create beautiful, lasting memories.

Taking These Lessons Beyond Travel

Practicing presence shouldn’t be reserved for travel alone—it’s a skill for everyday life. Rolling with the punches reduces stress and helps you appreciate the moment, whether at work, in relationships, or while tackling personal challenges.

Life’s twists and turns can lead to unexpected joys when you allow them to. Don’t waste energy getting caught up in what should have happened; embrace what is happening instead.

  • Be present. Focus on where you are and enjoy the moment.
  • Roll with the punches. Challenges aren’t obstacles—they’re opportunities.
  • Embrace the unexpected. Often, it’s where the best memories are made.

When you let go of perfection, you open yourself to a world of adventure, connection, and growth—both in travel and beyond.
